Success & Luck: Lot Of Fortune
I love looking at the lot of fortune and the lot of spirit when analysing a birth chart. I thought I’d share a bit about the lot of fortune and would love to hear about your LOF placement in the comments.
Ancient astrologers considered the Lot of Fortune as one of the most important points in the chart.
It’s not a planet but a point in your chart found through a mathematical calculation. This point - the Lot Of Fortune - and in particular the house it resides in is an area of life where accidental good fortune and happiness comes to us by chance or luck - rather than by our intentions or actions.
Lot, from the greek work kleros, is related to the concept of fate. Think, random circumstances of chance or luck that the person can experience despite their own efforts or actions. In particular it speaks to matters of the body, health and wealth. To worldly success and material prosperity - the happiness and financial welfare of the person.
The lot of fortune is calculated using the zodiacal degrees of the sun, moon and ascendent. In the chart it looks like an X in a circle.
As it’s the point that integrates the energy of the individuals sun, moon and AC, it’s understood as the place where the life purpose (as a combination of the big 3) can be expressed most easily and effortlessly. Where life force flows naturally.
Considering it’s calculated off your big 3 I can understand why it would hold a lot of weight, but the ancients mainly analysed it for length of life determination. These days most astrologers analyse it to understand where the client can experience luck and success without effort. Like an area life where lucky things happen or opportunities seem to come without effort.
Calculating the LOF will differ if you have a day or night chart - remember this is an ancient astrology technique and sect (diurnal or nocturnal sect) was the foundations of analysing planets within a chart.
The calculation looks like this:
Day chart: AC + Moon - Sun
Night chart: AC + Sun - Moon
So for a day chart you would take the distance from the sun to the moon in the direction of the order of the signs. Then project that degree from the ascendent again in the direction of the order of the signs.

There’s various considerations when analysing the LOF. Some houses are considered better than others to have the LOF placed. If it’s aspecting Jupiter or Saturn will change how it functions, and if it's under the Sun’s rays will also impact it’s ability.
But let’s just start with the house placement.
